FAQ`s for the trip

Is this a spa vacation?

No. This is a cultural journey into Finnish everyday sauna traditions, with rest and wellbeing as a natural part of the experience.

Do I need sauna experience?

No. Your host introduces each sauna and local customs. You set your own pace.

Is cold-water swimming required?

No. It is always optional and depends on weather, season and personal comfort.

What do people wear?

You may wear swimwear for the sauna experiences included in this journey, and swimwear is standard at our modern mixed-gender sauna venues.

Some traditional public saunas have separate facilities for women and men. At these venues, Finnish guests may choose to sauna nude, as is customary in traditional Finnish sauna culture. You are never expected to do anything that makes you uncomfortable: your host will explain the customs and practical arrangements in advance and help you choose the option that feels right for you.

At Kotiharjun Sauna, for example, swimwear is not permitted in the hot sauna room; guests who prefer not to sauna nude may cover themselves with a clean towel. Please bring your own swimsuit, and we will advise you in advance about towels and any venue-specific arrangements.

Can I join as a solo traveler?

Yes, subject to departure dates or a private arrangement.

Can the itinerary be extended?

Yes. Add Helsinki nights, Turku and the Archipelago, Kalliokumpu Eco Lodge or a Lapland extension.

"The sauna tour in February was fantastic! We learned so much about Finnish sauna culture and experienced so many of those special Finnish moments of happiness. The selection of saunas was excellent. Sami and Rebecca truly live and breathe Finland, sauna culture and environmental responsibility. They are knowledgeable, deeply committed and wonderfully enthusiastic. Thank you for an unforgettable tour!"

Sauna: Finland’s Way of Life

In Finland, sauna is far more than a wellness ritual. It is a place to slow down, reconnect, recover from everyday life and spend time together – an essential part of Finnish culture, not a special occasion.

In 2020, Finnish sauna culture was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. For generations, the sauna has been a familiar part of daily life: a place to wash, care for one another, prepare for important life events and share quiet moments with family and friends.

Finland has more than three million saunas for a population of around 5.5 million people. Saunas can be found in city apartments, summer cottages, workplaces, public waterfront spaces and deep in the forest. They are places where titles matter less, conversation becomes easier and time slows down.

There is a Finnish saying:

“In the sauna, everyone is equal.”

Today, public saunas are enjoying a vibrant renaissance. Helsinki’s contemporary sea saunas, Tampere’s historic public bathhouses and wood-heated lakeside saunas are as much a part of urban life as cafés, markets and restaurants.

On this journey, you do not simply visit a collection of saunas. You experience Finnish history, everyday life, food, design and the quiet social rituals that make sauna the heart of Finnish culture.

Created and hosted by Finland insiders

Finnspirit creates small-scale, personally hosted Finland journeys shaped by local knowledge, responsible travel and a genuine connection to place. This itinerary was designed for travelers who want to understand sauna not as a trend, but as a living part of Finnish culture.

From the Sea to the Lakes

This journey follows the changing landscapes of Finnish sauna culture. Begin in Helsinki, where contemporary public saunas meet the Baltic Sea and everyday city life. Then travel by train to Tampere, Finland’s Sauna Capital, where historic bathhouses, wood-fired heat and lakeside swimming reveal another side of the Finnish way of life.

Detailed itinerary: Day by Day

DAY 1 | Arrive in Helsinki – Sauna by the Sea

Welcome to Finland! After your individual arrival, you will meet Rebecca or Sami at your hotel. Together, you begin with an easy walk through Helsinki’s harbour district and historic Market Square – the perfect first introduction to Finnish city life.

In the evening, your Finnish sauna journey begins at Löyly, one of Finland’s best-known design saunas. Set beside the Baltic Sea, this striking contemporary building brings together warm wood, modern architecture, sauna heat and the refreshing possibility of a sea swim. Löyly is a wonderful introduction to the way Finland continually reinterprets sauna tradition: as a meeting place where design, sustainability and everyday community come together. After your sauna experience, you may wish to stay for dinner at Löyly’s acclaimed waterfront restaurant and enjoy the evening at your own pace.

DAY 2 | Helsinki – Design, Sauna & Everyday Life

Begin the day the Finnish way: if you wish, enjoy morning coffee and fresh pastries at Helsinki’s harbour market. Afterwards, head to Allas Pool for a morning sauna and swim experience overlooking the harbour, the Baltic Sea and Helsinki’s skyline. The waterside bathhouse brings together saunas, pools, food and a central waterfront setting just beside Market Square.

During a relaxed city walk, discover Helsinki through its architecture, design and your hosts’ personal favourite places. You will see how the city combines practical everyday life, contemporary Nordic design and a close relationship with the sea.

In the afternoon, step into the history of Finnish public bathing culture at Kotiharjun Sauna. Opened in 1928, it is Helsinki’s oldest surviving public sauna for women and men and the city’s last traditional wood-heated neighbourhood sauna. For almost a century, it has been a place where Helsinki residents come to sweat, rest and meet – a living reminder that the public sauna has long brought people together across professions, backgrounds and generations.

Your hosts will be happy to reserve a table at one of Helsinki’s excellent restaurants and share recommendations for a memorable evening in the city.

DAY 3 | From Helsinki to the Sauna Capital of the World

After breakfast, travel comfortably by InterCity train from Helsinki to Tampere – a journey from Finland’s coastal capital into the heart of Finnish Lakeland. Tampere is known as the Sauna Capital of the World, with nearly 70 public saunas across the region.

After checking in, there is time for a first walk through the city and its former industrial districts, where red-brick mills, river scenery, cafés and creative city life tell the story of Tampere’s transformation.

In the evening, unwind at Kuuma Sauna Restaurant, beautifully located by Lake Pyhäjärvi near the Laukontori market square. This contemporary lakeside sauna combines a traditional wood-heated sauna and a modern smoke sauna with Nordic food, a welcoming social atmosphere and the option of a refreshing lake dip.

Kuuma is a wonderful example of contemporary Finnish sauna culture: urban yet relaxed, rooted in tradition while open to everyone, and shaped around the simple pleasures of heat, water, good food and time together.

DAY 4 | Finnish Flavors, Sauna Tradition & Cold-Water Swimming

Today, discover Tampere through its food culture and everyday pleasures. Together, explore the historic Tampere Market Hall, browse small specialty shops and taste Finnish favorites along the way. Your hosts will also be happy to share their personal restaurant recommendations for the evening.

In the afternoon, enjoy one of the journey’s most memorable experiences: a traditional lakeside sauna at Rauhaniemi Folk Spa, on the shore of Lake Näsijärvi. After the warmth of the sauna, those who wish may take their first refreshing cold-water dip – or, in winter, try ice swimming – with Rebecca or Sami there to introduce the Finnish tradition at a calm and comfortable pace. Participation is always optional. Rauhaniemi’s traditional saunas are open year-round, with lake swimming in summer and ice swimming in winter.

Later, travel back in time at the historic Rajaportti Sauna in the Pispala district. Founded in 1906, it is Finland’s oldest public sauna still in operation. Its wood-fired heat, powerful löyly – the Finnish word for the steam and spirit created when water is thrown on hot stones – and beautifully simple stone interiors offer a direct connection to generations of Finnish sauna culture.

Here, it becomes easy to feel how closely Finland’s history and its sauna traditions remain connected. For a memorable final evening in Tampere, we are happy to reserve a table at one of our personally recommended restaurants.

DAY 5 | Helsinki – Time for Your Own Discoveries

Travel back to Helsinki by train, then enjoy the afternoon entirely at your own pace.

You may wish to take the ferry to Suomenlinna, Helsinki’s UNESCO World Heritage sea fortress, and explore its island paths, historic walls, cafés and sweeping views across the Baltic Sea. The fortress is reached year-round by public ferry from Market Square in around 15 minutes.

Or perhaps you would prefer to wander through Helsinki’s Design District, a compact creative neighbourhood of more than 25 streets and nearly 200 design-led shops, galleries, ateliers, cafés and studios. You may also choose to return to a favourite sauna, explore a new neighbourhood or simply enjoy some unhurried time in the city.

For your final evening in Finland, we are happy to reserve a table at one of our personal favourite restaurants and share recommendations for a memorable dinner in Helsinki.

DAY 6 | Hei, Hei, Finland

After breakfast, your journey comes to an end.

Perhaps you will return home with more than memories of extraordinary saunas: with a new perspective on Finland, an appreciation for its quieter rhythms, and a deeper understanding of why sauna remains at the heart of Finnish everyday life.

Hei, hei – goodbye for now, and welcome back anytime.

"Jos ei viina, terva ja sauna auta, niin sitten kaivetaan hauta.*"

“A Finnish saying goes: if liquor, tar and sauna do not help, the illness is fatal.”

"It was a wonderful journey through Finnish sauna culture – but it was so much more than that. Sami and Rebecca brought Finland, its people and everyday life vividly close to us. Thank you for such personal, warm-hearted hosting. It certainly will not be our last visit to Finland!”
Annette H. - Woltersdorf, Germany

"

“What a gift this journey was! Rebecca and Sami guided us with genuine passion through the ancient traditions of Finnish sauna culture and deep into the heart of winter. Crisp frost, fresh snow and a dip in the Baltic Sea made it unforgettable. Their many stories and insights into Finland, its people and its history brought the country wonderfully close to us. Helsinki and Tampere were equally memorable – two cities whose history, character and modern spirit gave us so much pleasure. A wholehearted recommendation for this journey with Rebecca and Sami.”
